Engineered hardwood flooring is an amazing product made up of a core hardwood, plywood or HDF (high density fiberboard). A top layer of hardwood veneer is then stuck on the surface to give it that pure natural hardwood look. Generally engineered hardwood consists of three or more layers but the end result is a product that has all the natural characteristics of various types of hardwood species but with greater stability against heat and moisture that all natural hardwoods are exposed to. This is an important feature when considering a choice between engineered hardwood and solid hardwood flooring. For climates where the weather tends to flux and the heat and moisture levels can shift, choosing an engineer hardwood can save a lot of money in repairs because unlike solid hardwood floors, engineered hardwoods do not contract and expand when exposed to the changing elements. Homes by the beach or in the desert are often affected by weather changes making the selection of engineered hardwoods a more prudent choice. Much like their solid hardwood cousins, engineered hardwoods have the same appearance because the veneers of engineered hardwoods are all natural. You can get different looks by altering the way the wood is cut. Different sawing methods like a flat or plain sawn, rotary cut, off-set rotary cut or sliced cut all provide for diverse exteriors.
